Renovating Pont Street: Almost There

Pont Street’s metamorphosis continues apace. While the drilling and banging has paused a little (there will be more) the background noise has been dialed back to the clink of wine bottles being shifted into their new homes, and the gentle swish of the duster. The end is very much in sight, with the new layout and atmosphere of the shop very much shining through the residual building works.

Our outside façade has had a new lick of paint, while inside we have new fridges and beautiful new racking to fit the most important element of all: new wines! Great to see inclusions from the new world (Hill of Grace, Dominus and some glorious older vintages of Monte Bello from Ridge estate). That said, in the heart of Belgravia it would be remiss to ignore the “old-school” with our walls now graced with Romanée Conti, Silvain Cathiard and Leflaive from Burgundy, a clutch of glamorous Rhones, Super-Tuscans with high, eye-wateringly great scores and a lovely selection of all the first growths. More of a Right Bank person? Petrus, Lafleur, Ausone… tick, tick, tick!

The next phase will involve laying out a beautiful new floor in our brand new Fine Wine Room, which will be the place to come to taste and chat, reclining on the Chesterfield sofa. The walls will be bedecked with some of the aforementioned fine wine, plus art we have commissioned from various local artists.

I have now been installed in my new office at the very back of the shop. We may still be waiting for the Chesterfield, but at least there is a juicy new sound system and a glittering array of top class wine from across the planet. Whenever I feel low I can now gaze towards the Romanée Conti be reminded what a joy it is to be alive.
